Significance of the Program To integrate character into the culture of our cities... The Character City concept involves focusing the attention of the community on the importance of character by emphasizing one character quality per month. Character is developed through training in schools, businesses, city government and the media. Integrating character training into each facet of the community creates an atmosphere where good character is encouraged. The purpose of character programs, however, is to reinforce character on the family level, where lasting societal change actually occurs. The beauty of the Character City idea is that it is meant to be adapted to the unique needs of individual communities. It is locally driven by a steering committee made up of community leaders who work under the direction of the mayor and the city council. The International Association of Character Cities (IACC), a division of the Character Training Institute, is an organization established to provide assistance and resources to those Character City leaders. |
