Sacajawea  (1784?-1812?)

Hero of Character

At the age of five, Sacajawea was taken captive by an enemy tribe during a raid on her family’s village.

While preparing for their venture to the Pacific Coast, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis met Sacajawea, her husband, and baby.  Realizing that their knowledge of the land and language would be useful, they asked Sacajawea and her family to join them on expedition.  Sacajawea proved her loyalty to the explorers by performing countless services for them, including risking her life to save their supplies when a squall overturned one of the canoes.

Over a year after they set out, the explorers finally reached the waters of the Pacific Ocean.  Sacajawea’s faithfulness in being committed to the mission was, perhaps, more accountable for their success than any other element.
